I remember it just like it was yesterday.
It was small and warm.
Kinda stuffy but mine
With a few puffy cushions I slept and lived
Protected, secure
Away from sight, scrutiny, observation
On my own small world
Where me was just for me
They were away from me and me from them
When my life and lover were mine
When my tears weren’t assumed pain of my sexuality
When my failure wasn’t the gods punishing me
When my successes was not the Lord’s pity on sinners
When my world wasn’t just about my bed
When I lived here and slept there and the two never met
When I didn’t have to tell the family where she may be
Or if she is still around
When diner time wasn’t time to have the awkward commonly hated conversation
Where we had to include me in the love life
Just to remind me they cared for me just like everyone else
Now I look at my warm stuffy but manageable closet
That shielded me from all things discriminatory
And I just wanna hug that pillow
Have myself a warm, fluffy
Finger-pointing free life.
