American Psychiatric Association to stop classifying transgender people as having a mental illness

Written by Courtesy Pink News Wednesday, 05 December 2012 10:59

The American Psychiatric Association has agreed to no longer classify people who are transgender and non-gender conforming as having mental illness.

The revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders mirrors similar moves to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in the USA in 1973.

Until now “gender identity disorder” was used to label people who are trans and this has been used as a basis for anti-equality campaigners to argue against the rights of trans people.

Wasted by the drink

Written by Gienah Monday, 16 April 2012 06:37

As I hurried down the flight of stairs towards the gate, I bumped into my neighbor who was coming in from the shop and exchanged a few pleasantries and left for the bus stop. As usual, I was running late for school. Just as I reached the main road, a public service vehicle pulled over and without wasting any time, I jumped in and secured myself a seat right next to the window. At the next stage, a shabbily dressed individual got into the vehicle; his face looked familiar and I instantly remembered her, it was Irene. A former colleague of mine during the primary school days. She made her way to the back of the vehicle and as she passed by I could tell that she had noticed me because she smiled and mumbled something to herself, she was however too intoxicated to remember my name. I was shocked because as she opened her mouth, she was missing four of her front teeth.
